Introduction and purpose: Hemodialysis treatment causes many changes in the lifestyle of patients and since most patients do not have enough care potentiality, it leads to caregiver’s burden. Care giver burden has negative physical, emotional, and social effects on caregivers, and affects the patient, other family members, and the health system. This study was conducted with the aim of determining the effect of Benson's relaxation exercises on the burden of patients, s care givers hemodialysis treatment. Methods: This research was a quasi-experimental with pre-Test and post-Test intervention data with a control group design. The research samples were collected from caregivers of patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment at teaching hospitals affiliated with Isfahan University of Medical Sciences. Simple random sampling was used, resulting in a total sample size of 76, divided into intervention and control groups. The intervention group participated in four sessions of Benson's relaxation practices, while a question-and-answer session was held for the control group. The Novak and Guest survey was completed by all participants to determine the level of caregiver burden before and after the intervention. The scores obtained from both groups on the survey were compared and analyzed by using the SPSS-26 statistical software.
Results: The statistical results indicated that most caregivers in both the intervention and control groups were women. The majority of the caregivers reported that their patients had low or very limited ability to perform personal tasks. Additionally, the results showed no significant differences in treatment duration between the two groups. Before the intervention, there were no significant differences in caregiver burden or its subscales between the two groups. However, after the intervention, significant differences were observed.
Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrated that Benson's relaxation practices were effective in reducing the burden experienced by caregivers of hemodialysis patients.
