Introduction and Purpose: The Behavioral Activation/Inhibition System and the family health climate are among the important factors influencing diabetes management. This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of procrastination between behavioral activation/inhibition systems and family health climate in families with type 2 diabetes.
Method: The present study was a correlational structural equation modeling (SEM) study. A total of 220 patients with type 2 diabetes from Shahin Shahr, Isfahan, were selected using convenience sampling. Data were collected using the Family Health Climate Questionnaire, Tuckman Procrastination Scale, and Carver and White's Behavioral Inhibition/Activation Systems Questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using structural equation modeling in AMOS software.
Results: The results indicated that the direct effect of the behavioral inhibition system on procrastination was negative and significant (β = -0.11, P < 0.05), and its direct effect on family health climate was positive and significant (β = 0.16, P < 0.05). However, the direct effect of the behavioral activation system on procrastination was positive and significant (β = 0.23, P < 0.05). Furthermore, the direct effect of procrastination on family health climate was negative and significant (β = -0.29, P < 0.05). The indirect effect of the behavioral inhibition system subscale on procrastination was also significant, but the behavioral activation system had no direct effect on family health climate.
Conclusion: The findings show that the behavioral inhibition system plays a supportive role in the family environment by reducing procrastination and directly improving the overall family health atmosphere, while the behavioral activation system indirectly creates tension in the family by increasing procrastination. So, psychological interventions for families dealing with type 2 diabetes shouldn't just focus on medical education—they should also aim to reduce procrastination and increase awareness of negative consequences to more effectively boost the family's emotional and supportive climate.
