Background and Aim: Mosquitoes are important vectors of human diseases which infect millions of people around the world annually. The aims of this study was to investigate the characteristics of larval breeding site and species composition of Culicidae larvae (Diptera: Culicidae) in Shush city, Khuzestan province during 2020-2021.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive-cross-sectional study was conducted in 10 regions of Shush city. Larvae sampling was done by scooping method with a standard ladle. The characteristics of larval nests, such as habitat condition, vegetation type, substrate type, sunlight condition and habitat type, were also recorded in special forms. The samples were identified with standard keys. Tables and graphs were designed using Excel software.
Results: In this study, 514 larvae of Culicidae mosquitoes were collected, which included 4 species including Cx. quinquefasiatus (30%), Cx. impudicus (2.4%), Cx. perexiguus (2.5%) and Cx.pusillus (65.1%). Cx. pusillus was the most abundant species. The larvae of Cx. quinquefasiatus was compatible with any condition and any habitat. In terms of the simultaneous presence of mosquito larvae in the larval nests, the highest presence of companionship was related to Cx. quinquefasciatus and Cx. pusillus larva.
Conclusion: This faunistic study in Shush identified four Culex mosquito species (Cx. quinquefasciatus and Cx. pusillus being the most abundant). The findings highlight Cx. quinquefasciatus's high adaptability and its coexistence with Cx. pusillus, emphasizing the need for future research to effectively manage vectors considering climatic and environmental factors.
